City excitement at night, representative of Oktoberfest vibes

If you are visiting Munich in late September or early October, the entire city revolves around one thing: Oktoberfest (the Wiesn). The festival takes place on the Theresienwiese, a massive open space. Over 6 million visitors descend on the city, and the logistics change significantly.

Does the Bus Stop at Oktoberfest?

Most Hop-On Hop-Off operators add a special stop or adjust their route to get you close to the Theresienwiese during the festival. Usually, the stop is at the main entrance or a short walk away (e.g., near Hackerbrücke or Hauptbahnhof).

Important Warning: Routes will be detoured. The inner city is packed, and parades (like the Costume Parade on the first Sunday) often close streets entirely. Check the daily map provided by the driver or the operator's app.

Visiting Theresienwiese Off-Season

Even without the beer tents, the Theresienwiese is a stop on some tours and worth a look.

  • Bavaria Statue: An 18-meter high bronze statue of the female personification of Bavaria. You can actually climb up inside the statue and look out through her eyes!
  • Hall of Fame (Ruhmeshalle): Behind the statue, is a colonnade honoring famous Bavarians (scientists, artists, politicians).

Oktoberfest Survival Tips

  1. No Luggage: You cannot bring large backpacks (or travel suitcases!) into the festival grounds or the tents. Leave them at your hotel.
  2. Cash is King: While cards are accepted more often, tipping the waitress in cash ensures faster beer service.
  3. Dress Code: You don't have to wear Lederhosen or Dirndl, but 90% of people will be wearing them. You'll feel less like a tourist if you join in. Cheap outfits can be bought near the train station.
  4. The "Oide Wiesn": For a small fee (approx €4), enter the "Old Oktoberfest" area. It has vintage rides, a more traditional vibe, and is less chaotic than the big party tents. Ideal for families.

Using the Bus for Recovery

After a day in the tents, the Hop-On Hop-Off bus is a savior the next morning. Sitting on the top deck, letting the fresh air hit your face while someone else drives you around, is the perfect hangover cure.
