View looking towards the Olympic Tower in Munich

Located right next to the BMW complex (often the same bus stop or the next one), Olympiapark is a breath of fresh air. Built for the 1972 Summer Olympics, it remains a heavily used public space and a masterpiece of landscape architecture. Unlike many Olympic venues that decay, this one is vibrant and full of life.

The Tent Roof Architecture

The "Behnisch & Partner" designed roof is iconic. Made of plexiglass and steel cables, it sweeps over the stadium, the hall, and the pool, mimicking the Alps. It was a revolutionary design symbolizing a transparent, democratic Germany, a deliberate contrast to the 1936 Berlin Olympics.

Top Things to Do

1. The Olympic Tower (Olympiaturm)

Standing 291 meters high, this defines the skyline.

  • The View: Take the high-speed elevator (7 meters per second!) to the observation deck (190m) for the absolute best view of Munich. On clear Föhn-wind days, the Alps look like they are right in the backyard.
  • Dining: There is a revolving restaurant (Restaurant 181) if you want a fancy lunch with a 360-degree view.

2. Roof Climb & Flying Fox

Adventure seekers can book a guided tour to walk on top of the stadium roof. You'll be strapped into a harness and walk along the acrylic panels. For even more adrenaline, you can take the "Flying Fox" zipline across the stadium arena. Note: This requires separate booking in advance.

3. The Olympic Lake

Rent a pedal boat or simply walk up the Olympic Hill (Olympiaberg). This hill is actually made of rubble from WWII ruins, cleared from the city and landscaped over. It offers a romantic view of the sunset over the stadium.

Events and Festivals

The park hosts the Tollwood Summer Festival (music, organic food, crafts) in June/July. If you are visiting then, definitely hop off here for dinner and concerts.

Bus Tour Strategy

On a sunny day, this is the perfect place to break for lunch. Grab a pretzel and a sausage at a kiosk by the lake, stretch your legs on the grass, and let the kids run wild before getting back on the bus for the return trip to the city center.
